Noise Cancellation Handles Engine Hum, Not Muzzle Blast
Active noise cancellation works on sound that repeats itself. You can have a rain of gunshots, but that sound will always arrive differently and isn't a hum or drone that can be filtered out by ANC.
Your earbuds run a microphone that samples the sound around you, calculates an inverse sound wave, and plays that inverse wave into your ear canal. The circuit needs a moment of the sound before it can produce the opposite of it. An engine hum is exactly that, which is why ANC can handle that well.
But muzzle blast doesn't give your ANC earbuds the type of sound it can work with. CDC researchers put peak sound pressure from firearms between 140 and 175 dB, with most recreational firearms landing between 150 and 165 dB. That peak sound is gone in a couple of milliseconds, before a cancellation circuit finishes listening to it.

The Label Test: How to Tell If Something Is Hearing Protection
Your hearing protection gear has to survive the sound of a muzzle blast. One important detail in your device lets you know if the product was ever tested for it.
Check the Package for a Noise Reduction Rating
Hearing protection sold in the United States carries a Noise Reduction Rating on its packaging. Consumer audio products don't. Federal product noise labeling rules require a hearing protector's package to state the words "Noise Reduction Rating" and the value in decibels.

The label test lets you know which products are rated and unrated for hearing protection. Unrated means nobody can tell you how much protection you're wearing at the firing line, including the person who sold you the earbuds.
The electronics contribute nothing against the sound of a gunshot, so any protection you get comes from the rubber tip and how well you seal your ears with it. A tip that seats deep in your left ear can sit shallow in your right. That same tip seals differently after you talk or turn your head.

Foam earplugs only earn their rating when you insert them correctly, and most shooters don't. NIOSH describes three steps:
- Roll the earplug into a thin snake
